The chaplaincy developed itself in the Armies during World War I, giving spiritual guidance on the battlefield and boosting the men’s morale in a secular context. The war quickly revealed two difficulties for the chaplaincy : on one hand, the insufficient number of clergymen to meet the needs ; on the other hand, the absence of hierarchy, organization and coordination. Most had no special training or induction into the military, and with little explicit instruction, chaplains used their own initiatives to determine the nature and extent of their duties. Posted in medical units, wearing nonstandard uniforms, these volunteers were more chaplains of servicemen than military chaplains. Though they were kept from the front line, the chaplains weren’t free from the horrors of war. Their action among the troops had such a good effect on their morale that they were praised by privates and senior generals alike.Cairn restricted access
