Résumé:This article suggests that petite guerre underwent two significant transformations in the early modern period. The first major one occurred as a result of the French state under King Louis XIV regularizing the actions of petite guerre and placing it in the service of attritional strategies. A second major transformation took place at the end of the XVIIIth century and resulted from a growing moral criticism of petite guerre and significant changes in the operational environment. These factors led to its decline and subordination to grande guerre as secondary or supporting operations in the service of annihilation or decisive battle strategies.
