His corpse is then stolen, shot again and again and then thrown in the Rhone River by the rioters ; upon its landing in Camargue it is not given a decent and official burial. The remains are not given back to the family before two years and the definitive burial takes place in 1821, after the criminal trial of his murderers that gives the lie to the official version fabricated at the time of his death, which would have been a suicide.
