Zusammenfassung:Pedro Rújula analyses the process of the taking up of arms by the Spanish population against the Napoleonic occupation forces. He explains the multiple reasons of the society wide participation in the armed struggle: weaknesses of the regular army, incidents between the French forces and the civilian population ; continuity between the political and the military aspects of the resistance, local powers fulfill the voids of the fledging central power, the first popular insurrection becomes a myth : the siege of Saragosse, the church sides with the resistance and bring to bear its influence in the struggle by arms as well as ideas, nationwide support for the (prisoner) king. The popular war, of which the guerilla is only one aspect, impaired the emperor’s plans and made him commit a lot more resources in the Peninsular war than anticipated. But the violence was general and universal, making the Spanish war one of the cruelest episodes of the Napoleonic era.
