Résumé:On July 2nd 1915, a law about death certificates is published. Accordingly, those of all persons whose death was a consequence of the war will bear the mention “Died for France”. This is part of a remembrance policy that aims to honour, beside soldiers fallen on the battlefield, all those who died because of their duty towards the country or as victims of enemy actions.By creating lay martyrs, the official patriotism gives a mystic quality to the sacrifice for the motherland, using catholic concepts to absorb Christian theology into state ideology. This process is eased by the French and Belgian Catholic Churches endorsing patriotism in the early 20th Century.
