WHAT’S WRONG WITH CORRUPTION (IN DEMOCRACIES) ? A CONTRACTUALIST APPROACHContemporary approaches to political corruption have largely dispatched with moral theories, instead conceiving of corruption as an ill of a strictly political nature. Institutional analysis condemns it for its attack on our institutions, which are left unable to perform their primary functions, whereas relational analysis denounces the relational injustice of which corrupt public officials are guilty. I shall examine these two approaches, supplementing them with a contractualist perspective, according to which political corruption is morally unjustifiable for the same reasons that manipulation and promise-breaking are. In other words, political corruption consists in the violation of the expectations public officials have led us to develop regarding how they intend to exercise the power associated with their office.Cairn free access
