We show how the gradual integration of the public sector into the System of National Accounts (SNA) addresses both the need to quantify the public sector and the political need to control fiscal policy.Cet article se propose de montrer les limites de l’indicateur « dépense publique » pour étudier le secteur public, limites qui apparaissent d’autant plus importantes dans le cadre de comparaisons internationales. Nous expliquons ces limites par les nécessités politiques qui sous-tendent l’évolution des statistiques.
