We show how the gradual integration of the public sector into the System of National Accounts (SNA) addresses both the need to quantify the public sector and the political need to control fiscal policy.Cet article se propose de montrer les limites de l’indicateur « dépense publique » pour étudier le secteur public, limites qui apparaissent d’autant plus importantes dans le cadre de comparaisons internationales. Nous expliquons ces limites par les nécessités politiques qui sous-tendent l’évolution des statistiques. Nous montrons notamment comment l’intégration progressive du secteur public dans le système de comptabilité nationale (scn) répond à la fois à un besoin de quantification du secteur public et à des besoins politiques de contrôle de la politique budgétaire.Cairn restricted access
