Unconscious counter-transference manifests itself as a stranger in oneself. Elements of a hallucinatory nature, occasional disturbances of the ego’s functions of synthesis, or negativity alone arise in the analyst, marking a break with his or her psychic continuity. They make it possible to visually represent something that is unrepresentable in the patient. Just as in the relationship between the individual and the group, in the session regressing to a mode of hallucinatory functioning recreates the conditions of a lack of psychic distinction between self and other. It renews that which existed before language, when no object was perceived as non-self. Unconscious counter-transference relies on bodily identifications, allowing elements awaiting symbolization, or the effects of their absence, to circulate from one psychical apparatus to another. The dissolution of boundaries facilitated by the analytic situation invites us to think about a third topography where, between the individual psyche and intersubjective linking, the vicissitudes of primary masochism in relation to the object become predominant. Cairn restricted access
