The « oceanic feeling » in the maternal negativeThe oceanic feeling represents the experiences both of inclusion and of dissolution in the whole, which would explain the rapprochement not only with the maternal but also with the negative as a dissolution of individual ties that belongs to the death drive. The maternal negative inevitably relates to an excessive presence of the object, corresponding to loss of self (as the field of development of a possible psychosis) or to the absence of the object with which union is nostalgically sought, in contrast to the hyper-presence of self (the domain of melancholia). A clinical example, considered in connection with the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute, demonstrates the relationship between the oceanic feeling as an ecstatic loss of self and boundaries and the oceanic feeling as a unification with the maternal and self-annihilation ; but it also shows how the maternal negative seeks to eliminate the paternal function as a separating agency. Cairn free access
