Like that of many other economists and thinkers, Marx’s oeuvre remains unfinished. Yet it is undeniably the work of a social scientist, rooted in economic analysis and persistently oriented toward action. Despite the wide disciplinary recognition his critics and admirers alike have granted him, the epistemological dimension of his contribution to the field remains undervalued. This article aims to address that oversight by exploring both the influence of Marx’s thought on the development of management thought and the reasons why this influence has been underestimated. The realism of his communist utopia may be subject to criticism, but it represents a conative ambition that positions Marx as a precursor to management science as a whole—particularly through his reflections on the nature of work. Cairn restricted access
