These documents allow us to look at the commercialization of radio and the commodification of music from the audience’s perspective. The article shows that those letters functioned as a commercial product through which listeners engaged with their own musical practices. It also sheds light on the market-oriented lens through which they saw music-making.Cet article analyse les lettres d’auditeurs et d’auditrices adressées dans les années 1930-1940 à des musiciens et animateurs d’émissions radiophoniques diffusant de la old-time music. Il les inscrit dans une histoire sociale de la radio et des pratiques musicales ordinaires. Ces documents permettent d’observer, du point de vue de l’audience, les effets de la commercialisation du médium radiophonique et la marchandisation de la musique. L’article montre ainsi que les lettres sont un produit commercial qui permet à l’audience d’aborder sa pratique personnelle de la musique et donnent à voir le rapport marchand qu’entretiennent auditeurs et auditrices avec leurs pratiques musicales.Cairn free access
