In the novel, two war stories–one fictional and one actual–emerge in the novel, allowing readers to appreciate the myth of war as a new beginning, and the reality of war as the disrupter of life. In the background of this double narrative of war is an America in decline, a free-falling hegemon in the hands of a neoliberal ruling class. Cairn restricted access
