Il montre comment les évolutions récentes de l’histoire de l’espace atlantique appellent une remise sur le métier des conclusions héritées de l’ouvrage fondateur de Durand Echeverria, Mirage in the West, publié en 1957, et qui n’ont pas véritablement été rediscutées depuis. La dimension économique et la question coloniale apparaissent ainsi comme essentielles dans cette déconstruction des thèses reçues au sujet des « Américanistes ».
