While recent scholarship has focused on Southern plantations, few studies have highlighted the extent of the phenomenon in major Northern cities, such as New York. By reviewing the various forms these new memorial sites can take, this article will first try to understand what visitors are looking for (historical knowledge, recreational experience, remembrance) before questioning the dangers posed by the commodification of this memory.Cairn restricted access
