Il montre notamment la manière dont l’action du gouvernement portoricain, à travers l’établissement de son Bureau des Migrations, la lutte des Afro-Américains pour les droits civiques, l’ « empowerment » ou le « community organizing » ont façonné l’action politiques des leaders portoricains. L’article traite également de l’adoption progressive du langage de la pan-ethnicité, par le biais du label « latino » ou « hispanique », par les Portoricains de New York. This article examines how Puerto Rican political leaders, after World War II, developed strategies oriented towards the building of a positive image of the Puerto Rican community in New York City. It shows how the government of Puerto Rico and the Bureau of Employment and Migration, the African-American struggle for civil rights, empowerment, and community organizing helped shape Puerto Rican leaders’ political activism. It also analyses the process through which Puerto Ricans in New York came to adopt the language of Latino pan-ethnicity.Cairn free access
