Morrison’s reflection focuses on the function of metaphors, catachresis and comparisons in discourses on the African-American experience—that all point to the difficulty of depicting the horror of that experience. Hence the uses of colour, the changing depictions of the tree in Sethe’s back or the impossible rendering of the infanticide itself are emblematic of Morrison’s working out of the tension between description and oblivion, experience and (re)memory.Cairn free access
