It aims to ensure that the programme is efficient and to adjust it in light of unforeseen circumstances. Regulation is part of nurse managers’ missions; yet nurses and care assistants sometimes support them. This article is based on ethnographic observations and interviews in two multidisciplinary operating theatres in the Paris region. It examines how these dominated professions negotiate their legitimacy in the face of strong autonomous medical and surgical regulations and in a context of systemic difficulties. The assertiveness of female regulators is due first and foremost to the information resource they embody, which is essential to the hospital enterprise. Secondly, their dedicated mandate, their spatial position of hyper-proximity and their localised experiential knowledge all help in the process of getting those involved on board, thereby enabling adjustments to be made to the programme. Their emotional work finally prevents service conflicts with users and regulates the affects of this closed space. Cairn restricted access
