A biosocial theoretical framework for the evolution of the human social system

The study integrates gene–culture coevolution, niche construction, and ethodiversity with Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems. The analysis considers the social system as a communicative domain that reproduces itself through autopoietic operations rather than through individual behavior. Gene–culture coevolution and niche construction provide long-term environmental and biological conditions, yet these conditions only acquire sociological relevance when communication selects them within functionally differentiated subsystems. Ethodiversity is understood as behavioral variation that social systems can stabilize as meaningful expectation structures. The article argues that social evolution emerges when communication restructures codes, boundaries, and institutional niches in response to ecological, cultural and technological change. This biosocial and systemic framework offers a theoretical framework that strengthens sociological explanations of social evolution without reducing them to biological determinism. Cairn restricted access
