Du fait de sa radicalité critique et de son style délibérément abscons, encourageant à considérer l’ethnographie comme une pratique poétique, ce texte a fait scandale et son auteur est devenu une figure inquiétante pour l’anthropologie. Au-delà d’une analyse du contenu du texte lui-même, il est question ici des raisons probables de cette polarisation autour de la figure de Stephen Tyler et de l’actualité de ses propositions pour l’anthropologie, pourtant massivement rejetées à l’époque où il les formulait.Anthropologist Stephen Tyler died in April 2020. This article accompanies the French translation of his most famous text, “Postmodern Ethnography: From the Document of the Occult to the Occult Documentˮ, originally published in English in 1986, in the now classic book edited by James Clifford and George Marcus, Writing Culture. Because of its critical radicalism and its deliberately abstruse style, encouraging to consider ethnography as a poetic practice, this text caused a scandal and its author became an ambivalent figure in anthropology. Beyond an analysis of the content of the text itself, we will discuss here the probable reasons for this polarization around the figure of Stephen Tyler and the actuality of his suggestions for anthropology, which were, however, massively rejected at the time they were formulated.Cairn free access
