The moral and social thought of the art-critic and polymath John Ruskin is not easy to grasp altogether. His charge against capitalism for the worker dignity’s sake inspired Gandhi and British socialism, yet he also had very conservative political views. The article takes the question of gift, especially God’s gifts, as a thread for exploring these contradictions. We follow a Marcel Mauss-inspired method of the analysis of gift-exchange and examine some of the most important texts from The Stones of Venice (1851-1851) to Modern Painters V (1860) and Unto This Last (1862). We find that Christianity, albeit reinterpreted facing 19th century’s England’s social problems, is a key to Ruskin’s praise of handwork as well as of his understanding of “help” as a social law and as the main duty of the individual. Our method also sheds a light on the criticism of wealth-accumulation he developed from 1860 on. In conclusion, we suggest that the complexities and political double-edging of his social philosophy reflects the ambivalence of the act of giving itself.Cairn free access
