Streszczenie:The regularity of the motif of the cross in Notre Dame at the end of the 12th century has almost no equivalent in other architecture of the time and calls for comparison with older monuments, with a wider horizon reaching as far as the Holy Land, via Italy and the Byzantine world. The close relations of the Parisian cathedral clergy with the Chapter of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, from which they received a fragment of the cross acquired in 1120, justifies this insistence linked to the possession of a Christic relic, as in the Roman basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. The cathedral clergy also used this symbol to affirm their local pre-eminence in a climate of rivalry with the monks of the Abbey of Saint Denis who used similar methods.
