The debates between supporters of the conservation of the 19th century stained glass windows and those who favored new ones will finally center around the question of creating figurative or ornamental stained glass windows. The glass painter, Jacques Le Chevallier, adapted his work according to the exchanges that took place within the Commission des Monuments historiques. He worn himself out for ten years in proposing projects for stained glass with figures, before the preference for the non-figurative prevailed. The stained-glass painter had then to imagine stained glass windows with geometric designs, conceived first as colored grisailles then, as modern non figurative stained glass windows inspired by the medieval model at the end of the project. These stained glass windows, which were intended to be discreet, became an essential milestone in the history of stained glass art of the second half of the 20th century and in the insertion of contemporary art into ancient edifices.
