Menuge, Enzo2025 fre Revue de l'art | 227 | 1 | 2025-03-01 | p. 52-67 | 0035-1326 RDA_22730 Drawing on several previously unpublished works, this study reassesses the visual relationship between Notre-Dame de Paris and the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. While the Benedictine abbey borrowed from Notre-Dame’s grand decorative cycles – particularly the celebrated “Mays” – newly rediscovered sketches and reductions reveal that it also anticipated and, in turn, inspired the cathedral’s later programs. The comparison of both interiors demonstrates a true artistic dialogue : Saint-Germain’s pictorial innovations, developed under Dom Bouillard at the end of the 17th century, not only emulated Notre-Dame’s Counter-Reformation visual language but also reshaped it. Likewise, its painted choir scheme of 1697 prefigured the monumental ensemble completed at Notre-Dame in the 1710s. Through these exchanges, both institutions forged a shared yet evolving sacred aesthetic that defined the great Parisian religious decors of the early eighteenth century. Cairn restricted access
