The Calvary scene is derived from Rogier van der Weyden’s triptych depicting the same subject in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. This paper argues that the triptych owned by Juana de la Cruz had an influence on one of her sermons, which dealt with Christ’s death on Golgotha. The highly unusual motif of the Virgin Mary embracing the cross like the Magdalen while being supported by St John the Evangelist was a bold artistic invention by Rogier. Its appearance in a sermon of the Franciscan nun must be understood as a direct borrowing from the small Flemish triptych she kept in her cell. Cairn restricted access |
