The question could be asked in 1998, with the publication by Joëlle Guidini-Raybaud of a text from 1466 referring to stained glass work and the realization of coats of arms by “ maistre Engibran pintre de avihon” at the town hall of Arles. Today the exhaustive inventory of ancient stained glass in Provence, carried out in the context of work on the Corpus Vitrearum, has led to the identification in the reserves of the Musée Calvet in Avignon of a small panel most likely from the church of Saint-Didier, whose very high quality can be recognized as coming from the hand of the artist. The comparisons with manuscript illustrations attributed to Quarton by François Avril, in particular with the Missal of Jean des Martins (BNF, Nouv. Acq. Lat. 2661, f° 291 v°), seem particularly convincing. Only a great painter is capable of this work. Here he seems to have improvised on the glass in total liberty. This evident spontaneity designates an autographic work. Even more than this mastery, the religious emotion transmitted in this small stained glass, its poetry, its spiritual force all designate a great master, Enguerrand Quarton, painter and stained glass painter. Le Dieu le Père of the Musée Calvet can very likely be added to the catalogue of the artist’s work.Cairn free access
