Zusammenfassung:When it was published in 1932, Gaston Poulain’s work Bazille et Ses Amis was highly successful among specialists as well as for a wider audience. The unanimous praise from the press demonstrated the emergence of a new demand, in which the rediscovery of Frédéric Bazille participated. The period is marked by an inflation of previously unpublished documents (letters and photographs), and by a “return to the origins” of Impressionism. Poulain’s career, one of the last interviewers of Claude Monet, translates in itself this turning point, in that he chooses a documentary approach questioning the artist’s word. His book, written based essentially on unpublished letters widely participated in this reorientation of the taste of historians and art history literature, while nevertheless satisfying the demand of the general public for a “romanticized” life of the artist.
