Descripció
Sumari:This article deals with the house and the rental housing from the early period of the project manager of the city of Ulm, Joseph Furttenbach. It focuses on the architectural museum that he installed there. Even though this was the first known architectural museum, art historians have paid little attention to it up to now. Yet this museum that in its time was very famous and often visited is remarkably well documented. Furttenbach described it and illustrated it in great detail in an unpublished manuscript preserved in the archives of the city of Ulm, as well as in his own treatise published in printed form in 1641. This treatise does not simply list the objects present in the collection, as in an ordinary inventory, but rather illustrates in detail how the objects were displayed, while providing an exceptional account of the unfolding of a visit to the museum. The article compares the museum with Furttenbach’s writings on the ideal museum and on the teaching of architecture in the schools. It goes on to define its place in the history of private and princely collections of art and in the history of municipal collections of maquettes. It concludes with the parallels that can be established between Furttenbach’s representations of his own activities as architect and the houses of artists, architects and even writers.
