As well as preventing drowning and enabling competitive swimming, they provide a space for leisure and socializing, and are indispensable islands of coolness in times of global warming. At the same time, public swimming pools consume a lot of energy and water and are therefore at the heart of discussions on how to reorient municipal sports facilities in times of climate crisis. Reclaiming natural aquatic areas as part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP) is a promise included in the capital’s candidacy and offers a horizon towards which to strive.Au-delà d’un regard comptable sur les piscines publiques, le plus souvent en déficit, cet article insiste sur leur utilité sportive, sociale et politique. En plus de permettre la prévention de noyades et la pratique de la natation de compétition, elles servent d’espace de loisir et de sociabilité, car elles constituent des îlots de fraîcheur indispensables en période de réchauffement climatique. Dans le même temps, les piscines publiques sont énergivores, grandes consommatrices d’eau, et se retrouvent de ce fait au centre de réflexions sur les manières de réorienter les équipements sportifs municipaux en période de crise climatique. La reconquête des espaces aquatiques naturels dans le cadre des Jeux olympiques et paralympiques (JOP) de Paris 2024 est une promesse inscrite dans le dossier de candidature et offre un horizon vers lequel tendre.Cairn restricted access
