Özet:Mountaineering was invented in Victorian England in the mid-19th century by men from the British social elite, who defined its values, principles and rules - in a word, its “ spirit ”. This spirit embodied amateur and bourgeois sporting values that mountaineers strove to defend at all costs, believing that mountaineering was threatened by the developments that were taking place in other sports at the time: democratisation, professionalisation and commercialisation.
