Since 2012, this status allows them to contribute to retirement pension schemes, for instance. However, such legal recognition still does not grant these athletes a proper professional status, and their activity is not recognized as labour - those who obtain the status are left in a difficult in-between. This article attempts to explain why this archaism is maintained. I argue that it is because this situation fits the logics of management: the insecurity of athletes is an efficient means to control them.La qualité de sportif de haut niveau reconnue par la loi sur le sport de 1975 ne répond pas à un statut professionnel à proprement parler. Bien qu’elle ouvre droit depuis 2012 à une prise en compte de trimestres de cotisation pour la retraite, elle résiste à la qualification de travail à part entière et place celles et ceux qui en bénéficient dans un entre-deux problématique. Le présent article tente d’élucider les raisons de cet archaïsme et formule la proposition selon laquelle il répond à une doctrine managériale posant l’insécurité des sportifs et sportives comme moyen de contrôle efficace de ces derniers.Cairn restricted access
