Experts agree that learning the language of the host country is a cornerstone of a migrant’s integration. In order to gain a better understanding of the psychological reasons for learning a language or rejecting it, the author examines the relationship between languages and the psychological device. Several clinical vignettes from psychotherapeutic and analytical treatments illustrate how language, whether mother tongue or foreign, acts as a messenger of unconscious memory traces in its capacity as a vehicle of relational history. It is this message that analytic treatment seeks to decipher in order to reveal the subject’s history with his or her language(s).La globalisation amène un nombre croissant de patients s’exprimant dans une langue étrangère sur le divan d’analystes ne partageant pas avec eux la même langue maternelle. Cairn free access
