This introductory article on the life and work of the French psychoanalyst Jean Laplanche (°1924 +2012) briefly describes his life history. Besides being a psychoanalyst, he was also an academic, translator and winegrower. After his philosophical training and studies at Harvard University, he entered analysis with Lacan. He later became the famous theoretician of Freudian psychoanalysis. The broad outlines of his work are outlined : the primordial phantasies, the Copernican revolution, the fundamental anthropological situation, the theory of anaclisis, the theory of generalized seduction and translation as a fundamental principle of the psyche. At the end of his life, he introduced the term of the Sexual and played an important role in the debate around gender. The article uses a clinical vignette by the author himself to illustrate Laplanche’s vision. Finally, the clinical implications are discussed. In conclusion, it summarizes how Laplanche has influenced the author’s thinking.Cairn restricted access
