This article focuses on the movement into politics concomitant with the historic teachers’ strike in 2018. While this phenomenon has been the subject of macro-sociological studies, arguing that it has feminized political institutions, our monograph of Oklahoma nuances these findings locally. Using a qualitative approach, this study analyzes the sociological characteristics of teacher candidates for the Oklahoma State Assembly, particularly those who were successful in being elected. These characteristics are explained by individual factors such as social, professional, and activist capital typically found among politicians. Contextual factors include weakened unions, new feminist resistance, and the backlash of the Trump years.Cairn restricted access |
