This system established itself upon the exclusion of certain minorities, notably Muslims. In 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi returned to the country and took over the leadership of the opposition in the name of her father, assassinated in 1947, with his National League for Democracy party. She affirms her allegiance to Buddhism and her support for the army despite the latter’s exactions against minorities. And it is as de facto head of government that she appeared before the Hague Tribunal in 2019.Cairn free access
