This article provides an assessment of the French President’s action four years after his election in 2017. The initiatives taken by Emmanuel Macron are featured by some strategic ambiguities driven by a dual programme of military public action. As heir to the Fifth Republic, the head of state defends a ‘certain idea’ of France, supporting a ‘sovereignist’ programme. As an entrepreneur of Europe, he invests an ‘intergovernmental’ and at the same time ‘supranational’ alliance strategy through a ‘liberal’ programme, revealing his ‘uncertain idea’ of Europe.Cairn free access
