In particular, there has been an increase in the number of studies seeking to qualitatively understand and explain the relationships and interactions between social robots, caregivers, and older adults. Yet, some uncertainty still exists in terms of the true needs of end-users or with regard to the needs embedded in the care relationship involving social robots. This article therefore aims to analyse the micro-dynamics of social robots, caregivers, and residents in eldercare facilities, in terms of the needs of caregivers and care recipients. As revealed in ethnographic observations and interviews conducted in Japan, contrasting patterns of behaviour have emerged among caregivers and care recipients, revealing interactions and non-interactions with a social robot named Lovot. In situations of conflicting needs, caregivers did not systematically rely on the robot. The main argument is that, while the needs of the caregiver can be met to some extent by social robots, these robots do not always meet the needs of the care recipient, especially since these needs are highly complicated in nature. Understanding these needs embedded in care relationships will allow us to ascertain how technological developments can meet the heterogeneous needs of robot users in the care setting. Cairn free access |
