It shows that these uses form part of a wider process of recognition, reappropriation, and politicization of Amazigh identity in Algeria and, more broadly, across North Africa. Drawing on in situ observations of Tifinagh inscriptions across a variety of institutional, media, technological, and symbolic contexts, the study highlights a renewed interest in writing that extends beyond its strictly linguistic function. Tifinagh thus emerges as a vehicle of identity visibility, transcending its primary role as a writing system to become an instrument of cultural affirmation. Situated within a multidisciplinary theoretical framework combining sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, anthropology, and semiotics, the article considers writing both as a situated discursive practice and as a mechanism for the production of meaning. The findings show that recognition of a writing system is constructed through its material presence and social circulation. The Tifinagh script has therefore become an active tool for redefining national identity markers and for ensuring the lasting presence of Amazigh identity across space and time.Cairn free access |
