From Chinese calligraphy to the writing of the Borromean knotJacques Lacan began the lesson of February 9th 1972 of his seminar ...ou pire with the calligraphy of a Chinese phrase written on the board. He ended the session unexpectedly with the writing of the Borrompean knot. This was to be his last reference to Chinese and the first occurrence of the Borromean knot. My aim here is to develop the hypothesis that, with the Borromean knot, Lacan had at last found his personal calligraphy, a writing of the erasure, of the gap, of the hole, in short an “opétique”, the logic of the hole as the basis of all logic. The Borromean knot is a form of mathematical poetry, a topology inhabited by the hole of the subject. The Borromean knot is not a theory, but rather a metaphoric act, a poësis. It is Lacan’s encounter, his invention, his sinthome, as was writing for Joyce. It is part of his eminently singular, inimitable style. The Borromean knot is Lacan’s poem and poetry.Cairn free access |
