Mères de filles incestées : le grand aveuglement

While incest concerns society, it also concerns the whole family, starting with the mother. How can we explain that mothers so often remain blind to the incestual climate or to incest itself? After offering a reminder of the theory on traumatic neurosis, the author analyzes the novel Le Voyage dans...

How can we explain that mothers so often remain blind to the incestual climate or to incest itself? After offering a reminder of the theory on traumatic neurosis, the author analyzes the novel Le Voyage dans l’Est and the film Une famille by Christine Angot, the book of testimony by Caroline Darian, Et j’ai cessé de t’appeler papa, published in April 2022, eighteen months before the beginning of the trial of her father, Dominique Pélicot, as well as a case study from her analytical psychotherapy clinic, focusing on the reactions of mothers. She concludes that the causes of their blindness may vary: mind control, denial for fear of breakdown, refusal to give up economic advantages and/or social status, rivalry, and so on. She also often observes a mother-daughter fusion. A therapeutic arsenal based on analytical psychotherapy can help victims to free themselves from the heaviest burden of incest or the incestual climate and to become the subject of their own life, in a context where society seems to gradually want an exit out of the harmful culture of incest. Cairn restricted access
