At the beginning of the 1930s, the city of Metz began a project of urban renovation that jeopardized the existence of brothels. The article draws on archival correspondance to study the municipal management of brothels, highlighting the ambiguities of the relationship between local notables, urban society, and prostitution. Although prostitutes experienced everyday repression, they nonetheless maintained their place in the city, given the interests they shared with other businesses. In this fashion, it is possible to show the economic issues at stake in the local reform of prostitution.Cairn free access
