With this in view, the author has taken a particular interest in an important figure in the Brussels book market, the bookseller-printer Joseph Ermens (1736-1805). Ermens, whose bookselling activities were his main contribution to the book industry, was very interested in publications of the 15th century. The compilation of sale catalogues, following on the suppression of religious houses in the Austrian Netherlands by emperor Joseph II in 1783, gave him an opportunity to display his knowledge of the subject, and these catalogues are at the base of the author’s study of Ermens’ bibliographical working methods. It emerges that, in broad terms, modern procedures are not very different from those favoured in the past. The bookseller was happy to depend on catalogues of incunables and sale catalogues as bibliographical tools, and also made use of the comparison of print types as a means of attributing a publication without colophon to a particular printer. To start with, the author summarises the main events of the career of this bookseller, and the sequence of these sales.Cairn restricted access
