Unlike the other surviving illuminated manuscripts of the texts of Chrétien de Troyes, which were all executed in Picardy or Flanders, these two manuscripts were both made in Paris between 1315 and 1325, probably in the royal circle. This article explores two interrelated hypotheses. First, it suggests that the two Parisian manuscripts model Perceval on the image of Saint Louis as the ideal Capetian monarch and the most Christian King. Second, it understands the manuscripts as revealing a crisis in reading, as examples of the uneasy coexistence of oral and literate cultures, which itself accounts for the disappearance of the texts of Chrétien de Troyes in the later Middle Ages.
