The British Army’s Civil Affairs were an essential link in the smooth running of Allied military operations in north-west Europe in the summer of 1944. At the time of the Allied landings, they were deployed in Calvados, and some detachments remained in the department until March 1945. Created to ensure that civilians do not interfere with ongoing military operations, they operate in multiple areas of action: refugee care, dialogue and work with civilian authorities, supplying the population, etc. They are in fact an intermediary between the military and civilians, between Allied and French authorities. The strength of this unit undeniably lies in its ability to adapt to the realities of the field. Therefore, this article looks at the relations between British military and civilian populations of Lower Normandy through the prism of a unit in charge of these interactions.Cairn free access
