| Résumé: | Biographical note: Gustav Adolf Seeck, Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt Main description: In der zweisprachigen Ausgabe der euripideischen Alkestis schließt sich die Prosaübersetzung eng an die Versfolge des Originals an, um die Verbindung zum Kommentar zu erleichtern. Der Kommentar, der keine Griechischkenntnisse voraussetzt, gibt Auskunft zu Sach- und Deutungsfragen. Die ausführliche Einleitung informiert über historischen Hintergrund, die Motive "Lebenstausch" und "Opfertod und Wiederkehr" im griechischen Mythos und bei Euripides, sowie über Nachdichtungen und moderne Interpretationen Main description: The Greek text of Euripides' Alcestis has been critically edited for this bilingual edition; the prose translation attempts to follow it verse by verse. The commentary, which assumes no knowledge of Greek on the part of the reader, explains questions of content and interpretation. The comprehensive introduction provides information on the historical background, the motifs of 'life exchange' and 'sacrificial death and return' in Greek myth and in Euripides' work, and on adaptations and modern interpretations |
